HELMUT NEWTON

The MEP - Maison Européenne de la Photographie - in partnership with the InCadaqués festival is proud to present with all most 50 photos, the emblematic work of photographer Helmut Newton, now recognized as one of the greatest authors of 20th century photography. Through this selection of prints from the MEP collection, the exhibition aims to offer a representative overview of the great Newtonian subjects and the richness of the photographer's work.

His sophisticated fashion photographs, celebrity portraits and daring nudes turned the world of magazines upside down in the 1960s, before ending up on museum walls a few decades later. A provocative gentleman, Helmut Newton imagines incongruous and humorous scenes of life, in a fantasy world of luxury, populated by powerful, sculptural and over-sexualized women. His daredevil aesthetic hasn’t ceased to assert for nearly fifty years a radical freedom of creation, ignoring good taste and good morals, mixing in his images voyeurism, narcissism, eroticism and violence. His images have toured the world and have imposed a unique style that has revolutionized the imagination. His photographs continue, even today, to question as much as they fascinate, reaffirming their status as icons.

EYE IS A CAMERA

InCadaqués Festival, in partnership with the MEP - Maison Européenne de la Photographie - and the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, presents a collective exhibition entitled "The Photographic Vision of Salvador Dalí".

In the 1920s and 30s, Salvador Dalí wrote a number of texts in which he enthusiastically celebrated the technical and creative powers of the lens – both photographic and filmic. As Paris correspondent for the Catalan magazine L’Amic de les Arts, and later in contributions to surrealist magazines, his writings evoke the magical potential of the camera in his own inimitable style. This exhibition brings to light Dalí’s ideas about photography and film alongside images from the time, many of which he used, or referenced directly, as well as works by contemporary artists who continue to explore the mysterious field of photography that captivated Dalí.
