Ion Babeanu

A film director for more than twenty years, Ion has worked across fiction, documentary and animation, developing a practice driven by a deep fascination with images and the ways they shape perception and storytelling. His work moves between narrative forms and more experimental approaches, exploring what an image can suggest beyond what it simply shows.

Alongside directing, his work as a documentary cinematographer and fiction colorist keeps him closely connected to every stage of image-making, from shooting to the final subtleties of post-production. This continuous dialogue between framing, light, rhythm and texture has become central to the way he sees.

Roques

Since childhood, Cadaqués and the coast of Portlligat have formed part of Ion’s intimate landscape. Yet it is only recently that he has turned his attention to the mineral presence of the rocks, shaped by wind, sea, rain and time.
His gaze, long informed by pareidolia - the tendency to recognise familiar forms in the formless - sometimes transforms these masses of stone into faces, animals or silhouettes. Through photography, he is less interested in what they represent than in what they awaken in us: fragile apparitions, revealed and then erased by light, hovering at the shifting boundary between reality and imagination.
