Total Internal Reflection

« Nothing is too wonderful to be true if it be consistent with the laws of nature » Michael Faraday

This body of work draws from the CIA’s declassified Stargate Project (1978-1995), a Cold War program that investigated psychic phenomena, particularly remote viewing, as a possible tool for intelligence gathering. Sosnowska is particularly drawn to this archive as it allows her to navigate a crucial moment when the Institution attempted to legitimize the uncertain, exposing how speculative practices were institutionalized and preserved as authoritative knowledge. Working primarily through staged studio photography, she constructs images that sit at the intersection between evidence and construction. Sculptural elements, archive objects, and photographic interventions are brought into the studio and reconfigured, allowing objects to perform as both witnesses and fictions. The archive becomes material, something to handle, obstruct, and fragment. She approaches the archive not as a stable repository, but as an unstable system that both generates and unsettles meaning. The photograph becomes a site where authority trembles, where seeing is provisional, and where knowledge reveals itself as constructed rather than given.
