Send Me Flowers
Laia Benavides’ Send me Flowers examines the social and symbolic circulation of flowers, understood as objects of mediation between individuals. More than an intimate gesture, their offering belongs to a codified ritual: they condense a collective language that articulates love, friendship, gratitude, or mourning. In this sense, they embody a form of substitute communication, where emotion is conveyed through a material sign that is standardized and perishable.
In her photographs, Benavides subverts these conventions to reveal their paradoxical dimension. The flower, at once fragile and ostentatious, becomes a medium of projection: it expresses both the intensity of feeling and the standardization of its expression. The photographic medium, with its capacity to suspend time, thus comes into tension with the transience of the vegetal.
