Vera van Almen (1986) is a Dutch visual artist based in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands. She graduated from the Photo Academy Amsterdam in 2017. Her practice explores how form can be given to what cannot be fully seen, known, or experienced. Working entirely without a camera, she creates photographic works through analogue processes such as Van Dyke Brown and cyanotype, using only light, photosensitive materials, and time.

Places I have never been

Places I Have Never Been presents camera-less images that evoke landscapes existing somewhere between the visible and the imagined. Created entirely with light through analogue photographic processes, the works suggest places that feel strangely familiar, yet remain beyond reach.
The series explores the experience of recognising something that does not exist, as if it has been seen or known before. These imagined landscapes cannot be visited or located, yet they can evoke a sense of memory, longing or recognition.
