Eloïse Labarbe-Lafon

France

Eloïse Labarbe-Lafon is a French visual artist and photographer. She explores the preciousness of the image-object through moments captured on black-and-white film, which she then hand-colours with oil paint, using brushes or the tips of her fingers.

Her painted photographs extend the image beyond the moment of capture. Through touches of colour, glazes and transparencies, she shifts reality, blurs its contours, and brings intimate scenes to the surface, suspended somewhere between memory and fiction.

Gabrielle of the Angels

In Cadaqués, Eloïse Labarbe-Lafon meets Gabrielle by chance, an angel who has devoted the past fifteen years to caring for the village’s stray cats. Struck by her way of moving through the world, Eloïse invites her to become the starting point of her residency project.
For one week, she returns each day to Gabrielle’s cat-filled home, where conversations, gestures and shifting light create a sense of suspended time. Developed by hand and painted with oil, the images of Gabrielle of the Angels trace the encounter between two women, as everyday life slowly drifts beyond the documentary and into the realm of the imaginary.
