This photography project focuses on the first "Sacrifice Zones" ever created. These zones have been devised by governments in the late modern era for the covert production, testing, and maintenance of all kinds weapons and chemicals. Typically the inhabitants of these areas become unknowingly part of the whole experiment as guinea pigs. As such these areas have been recently regarded as prime examples of ecocide, the irreversible destruction of nature on a massive scale. Central Asia was an overlooked region on the world map for a long time, but in recent years, that has changed, mainly due to escalating tensions in the region, culminating in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The countries in this vast area are caught between different major powers, and these former republics of the Soviet Union fear a repetition of history. Kazakhstan is by far the largest country in this area and is still dealing with the deadly legacy of the Soviet Union.
