Alain Licari
France
Born in France, Alain Licari lived in Spain for several years and worked in New York from 2015 to 2020. Since September 2020, he has divided his time between Guinea and France.
A self-taught photographer, he draws inspiration from humanist and social photography. His work focuses on people and communities living on the margins of society, or whose everyday lives can take on a universal dimension. He immerses himself closely in their lives, spending extended periods of time with them; he observes and seeks the right distance in order to convey stories that question current events and our ways of life. His approach is close to that of documentary filmmaking: he takes the time to develop his series and regularly returns to places he has previously photographed.

“"Studio Guinée – Villages" is a series of portraits created in rural areas of Guinea. It draws inspiration from the legacy of the great West African photography studios, particularly those of Seydou Keïta, Malick Sidibé and Oumar Ly, who established portraiture as a means of social representation and a way of constructing collective memory.
The approach is simple: in each village, residents are invited to pose in front of the wall of their home or a familiar building. The wall becomes a natural backdrop, an open-air studio. Each person is free to choose their pose and the objects they wish to present. Every photograph is the result of an encounter and a collaboration.
