LISA SORGINI

AUSTRALIA

Lisa Sorgini is an Australian artist whose photographic practice inhabits the intimate, often unseen spaces where caregiving, motherhood, memory, and domestic life intersect. Rooted in lived experience and informed by feminist and sociological inquiry, her work resists sentimental or reductive depictions of women and maternal labour, instead revealing these roles as sites of complexity, resilience, and cultural significance.

In Passing

In-Passing began in 2015, the year Lisa became a mother and soon after lost her own. This collision of birth and death sparked a decade-long exploration of identity, grief, and transformation.

The images bear witness to the profound changes of motherhood—the physical, emotional, and psychological shifts that redefine the self. Like adolescence, this evolution navigates a liminal space where the maternal self disappears and is reborn—a quiet reinvention at the threshold of loss and renewal.

The series presents a visceral account of intimacy and chaos within the family, capturing the tender, complex realities of the mother-child bond. Beyond the personal, it reaches toward the intangible currents of memory and consciousness, evoking the unspoken weight of motherhood that shapes experience in subtle, enduring ways.
