Rogier Houwen

Netherlands

Rogier Houwen (b. 1992, Laren, NL) is a photographic artist based in Amsterdam. A graduate of the University of the Arts Utrecht (2015), his work has been exhibited internationally. His practice explores landscapes as living, multi-layered contexts — physical, conceptual, and spiritual. Treating the camera as an extension of his body, Houwen engages in dialogue with the land. In his studio, images are further transformed through experimentation with digital and analog printing on handmade papers, creating subtle, tactile works.

Cosmos

Cosmos is a photographic project created by Rogier Houwen during a two-month journey through Mexico in 2024, supported by the Dutch Embassy and Terreno Baldío Arte. Traveling from Yucatán to Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, Michoacán, and finally Mexico City, he captured landscapes where the natural and the human-made intersect: caves, cenotes, Maya temples, botanical gardens, cactus fields, and volcanoes.

At a time when our relationship with nature is increasingly fragmented, Houwen seeks to restore a sense of unity. His photographs reveal edges where culture and nature meet, not as opposites but as parts of an inseparable whole. The title Cosmos recalls harmony, pointing to the balance between the natural and the built. In temples and cenotes, antennas and cacti, ritual stones and plants, he finds reflections that invite us to ask: how can culture and nature coexist in harmony, and what might that look like today?
